What on earth is a TSA?

What on earth is a TSA?

May 21, 2026

So, someone asked you about your TSA?

I had a friend the other day ask me what a ‘tax-sheltered annuity’ was. To most people, that probably sounds far more complicated than it actually is. In reality, a tax-sheltered annuity, often called a TSA, is usually just another name for a 403(b)-retirement account.

And no, this TSA is not the airport agency demanding that you remove your shoes, belt, watch, dignity, and laptop from your bag at the security checkpoint.

The confusing part is that the terminology has stuck around for decades, especially in education and healthcare settings. Historically, many 403(b) plans were built around annuity contracts sold by insurance companies, so the nickname “TSA” never really went away.

What is a 403(b)?

A 403(b) is a retirement savings account designed for employees of:

  • Public schools
  • Universities
  • Hospitals
  • Churches
  • Certain nonprofits

It works similarly to a 401(k):

  • Contributions can come directly from your paycheck
  • Investments grow tax-deferred
  • Some employers offer matching contributions
  • You have both Traditional and Roth options

A lot of people hear the term “tax-sheltered annuity” and assume it is some highly complex financial strategy. In most cases, it is simply a retirement account designed to help employees save for the future in a tax-advantaged way.

The most important thing to consider is understanding what is inside your 403(b). Some plans offer solid, low-cost investment options, while others may come with higher fees or more restrictions depending on the provider.

That is why it is worth reviewing your account from time to time:

  • How much are you contributing?
  • Are you receiving an employer match?
  • What fees are you paying?
  • Does your investment allocation still make sense for your goals?

Retirement planning does not have to be overly complicated. Sometimes, simply understanding the terminology is the first step toward making more informed decisions.
