What is Risk?

What is Risk?

August 10, 2026

When you think of “risk,” you probably think about uncertainty. Not knowing what the future holds, whether markets will rise or fall, or whether life will go according to plan. (Spoiler alert: it usually doesn’t.)

The reality is that uncertainty is unavoidable. Financial planning isn’t about predicting every possible outcome; it’s about building a strategy that can adapt when the unexpected happens.

An important part of that strategy is understanding your risk tolerance. Are you comfortable experiencing market fluctuations in pursuit of long-term growth, or do you prefer a more conservative approach?

One of the first things we do when building any financial plan is understand where someone falls on the risk spectrum. Many people have never truly considered their own tolerance for risk. We have had clients come in and say, “I’m risk averse,” when their current portfolio allocation is much more aggressive than they realize.

The challenge is that risk tolerance is often easy to define when markets are doing well. It is only truly tested when uncertainty becomes reality.

The goal of financial planning is not to eliminate risk. That isn’t possible. The goal is to understand the risks you are taking, why you are taking them, and whether they align with what you are trying to accomplish.

A successful financial plan is not built around avoiding every possible setback. It is built around having the confidence and preparation to navigate whatever comes next.
